Yellow ‘chlorine cloud’ lingers over Beachy Head after infamous suicide spot is evacuated as 50 visitors are left with burning eyes.
A section of coastline was evacuated after dozens of holidaymakers complained of stinging eyes, sore throats and sickness.
The East Sussex coast line, popular at this time of year, has been cleared by emergency services.
Some holidaymakers complained of a ’strong smell of chlorine in the air’.
UK Coastguard commander Steve Carson told the independent: “This seems to have been caused by an unknown haze coming in from the sea, but the source has not yet been established.
“People living along the coast in the area have been advised by emergency services to keep doors and windows shut and to move away from the Birling Gap area in particular.”
